Pre-training event for T4SEA: The United Nations Standards and Norms in Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice – An Introduction

On May 28, 2024, we had the pleasure of reaching a significant milestone in the lead-up to our Training on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice for Southeast Asia (T4SEA). Anika Holterhof is a Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Officer, UNODC, joined us to deliver an insightful presentation on overview discussing UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, highlighting their alignment with human rights conventions. It emphasizes the integration of criminal justice practices with human rights principles.

The session, held as part of our pre-event activities, was both enlightening and highly interactive. Participants had the opportunity to engage directly with Anika, discussing   underscores the importance of non-binding international agreements in crime prevention and criminal justice and deepening their understanding of these crucial international standards.

  • Introduction: the creation and adoption, legal nature, and scope of the UN S&N
  • Decision-making bodies
  • The role of UNODC and its partners
  • The UN S&N’s continued relevance, and recent developments

As we build today’s groundwork is to facilitate further discussion on concepts and practices in this region that are relevant to the core content of the course, including the protection of rights of victims, suspects, offenders, and governance & integrity, we eagerly anticipate welcoming all participants to Thailand from June 4th to 14th, 2024. The discussions and connections formed during this preparatory session promise a rich and productive training programme.

Stay tuned for more updates as we continue our journey toward enhancing the capabilities and understanding of criminal justice professionals across Southeast Asia.
